2003 Children's Summit: Strong Beginnings

Research

Homeless in Minnesota 2003: Key facts from the survey of Minnesotans without permanent housing

Drawn from interviews with more than 3,000 homeless adults and youth throughout Minnesota, this research describes some of the causes, effects, and circumstances surrounding homelessness. The statewide survey has been conducted by Wilder Research Center every three years since 1991. The sections on Children, and Youth on their own in this initial report address homelessness issues for the middle childhood age range. The web site has the pdf version of this report available for downloading and will also have other, issue-specific reports posted based on further analysis of the 2003 survey.

Robbinsdale School District Middle School Study

This comprehensive study of middle school education in the Robbinsdale School District was conducted to: 1) consider best practices in middle school education, 2) review existing practices in Robbinsdale Area Schools and 3) make recommendations that will lead to an improved middle school program. The middle school study committee included principals, support staff, district administrators, and parents and teachers representing students in grades 6-8 from each middle school.

What We Know Works (pdf)

This guide, by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change, translates complex evaluation research into actionable strategies needed to build stronger communities. What We Know Works is a primer that summarizes current research in four broad areas: healthy families and children, thriving neighborhoods, living-wage jobs, and viable economies. It provides a foundation of effective practices for people who need information and who need it now. The sections on “Strengthening Families” and “Youth Development” are particularly pertinent to the 2004 Children’s Summit.

Youth in the Media

Negative, fear-based coverage of youth in the media misinforms the public and can lead to short-sighted public policies that harm young people and, ultimately, all of society. What we need is balanced news coverage of youth issues, and inclusion of youth voices in the media. Issue Overview sets the stage with a general survey of the topic; Framing the Issue looks a little closer and explores relevant research; and Resource Links are provided for access to the studies and organizations behind our findings, as well as detailed information beyond the scope of this report.
